We are able to access government funding for equipment such as our van, fridges and freezers from various government and charity aid organisations.
This is not the case for the ongoing cost of food and running expenses
Our endeavor is to help people in financial crisis with the basic necessities of food which is of good quality and at little cost. We have identified several ways in which a person or business may give. Primarily this is done by sponsorship.
By sponsoring a particular food item or area of service needed, we can be assured of a consistent supply of quality food each day. Some food lines are donated directly from the producer, such as bread and some fruit and vegetables. These are collected by our Food Aid van on a daily basis. Also food is given from time to time from suppliers which is in surplus or past it's saleable best by date.
By calculating the cost of purchasing certain foods, a sponsor may meet the cost of that food item on a monthly basis by either paying the supplier directly or having Food Aid do it. This provides for a consistency in our supply to those in need.
This is where a food supplier gives a certain amount of product in response to a certain amount purchased. E.g. mince. A sponsor gives us the money to purchase mince. We then buy 10 kg, and the butcher gives us 10 kg. This is a win, win situation where everyone along the line feels they are contributing something.
For those recognising the need of Food Aid, but prefer to give one off donations help to fill the gaps in our food lines which occur at various times. Also we can have specific need seasons, such as Christmas where extra finance is needed to make up Christmas hampers.
A box can be placed in a workplace with appropriate signs along with management to encourage employees to buy an extra food item in their shopping each week and place it in the box for collection on a regular basis. This way a group of individuals can contribute in a way that is achievable to them and collectively this can add up to allot.
Like any organisation, Food Aid has some overheads which are kept to a minimum. Like food, we seek to have these overheads met by donation or at cost so we can maintain a service of excellence. These areas include cleaning products, packaging, insurance, fuel, stationary, etc.
