Using Food Aid

Food Aid aims to help those in our community who are in financial crisis and need of food.

People in need can access Food Aid by coming in person to our shop (see Locate Us). Once there, they need to present an identification card which is usually a health care card or a pension card. This identification is necessary for us to make a receipt of the transaction and donation for legal purposes. A $7 donation is required for each box to help keep the operation running effectively.

What's in a box

Boxes of food are made up in three sizes, single, double and family.

A"double" size box of food would normally contain -

  • 2-4 loaves of bread - bagged
  • bread rolls - bagged
  • pastries or donuts or small buns - bagged
  • a large cake - bagged
  • savory buns - bagged
  • 2 cups of rice - bagged
  • 2 cups of pasta - bagged
  • 2 cups of cereal - bagged
  • 1 cup of sugar - bagged
  • 1 tin of baked beans or spaghetti
  • 4-6 potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 slice of pumpkin
  • 1 slice of cabbage
  • carrots
  • apples
  • Other fruit and vegetables depending upon what is collected on the day - celery, spinach, herbs, capsicum, melon, stone fruit, etc.
  • Home made soup
  • 1/2 doz. eggs or mince
  • 500g of margarine
  • 1 litre of milk
  • Baby food is given as needed
  • A variety of other non-perishable food is given out when available

* This is a general gauge to what's in a box. The food items including quality and quantity depends upon what has been donated.

Handing out the Food

The food is usually prepared and in the boxes by 10.15am, ready for the door to be opened for serving the people at 10.30am to 1.00pm.

Two people are required on the counter to give out the food. One person greeting the people and taking down details on a computer and receipt book and the other person compiling an appropriate box of food.

Baby food such as milk powder, cereal and jars are given out as needed.

Donation

A $7.00 donation is requested for the box of food. First time people are given a food box even if they have no money. However, people who come back on a regular basis are encouraged to give the donation.

Those who continue to come for food with no money are never sent away empty handed and will be offered bread and soup. We endeavor to respect people's dignity, knowing how difficult a situation these people may be in.

A person is able to receive a box of food once a week for four weeks and then once a month if necessary after that.

Food Aid aims to help those who are in a crisis situation - to help them through a difficult time. This general policy helps to reduce abuse of the provision and helps to maintain food for everyone.

Records

A receipt book is kept containing name, box no., receipt no., amount paid and signature. A computer record is also kept containing their health care no. and the record of when they have received a box of food and how much they have paid.
